Could a facelift lift your career?

Facelift | David Altamira, MDThe number of cosmetic procedures in the U.S. increased close to 20% between 2011 and 2015. Among cosmetic procedures, the facelift continues to be one of the most common and popular facial cosmetic surgeries, and it can be a bit of an investment.

Turns out, however, that the price of plastic surgery, especially a facelift, may be worth every penny — and more. When it comes to your career, it might be a smart financial decision, according to a study published this year in the JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery journal.

Whether you’re hoping for a promotion or looking for a new job, a refreshed face could help your chances

This recent study measured the “impressions” others had of women before and after undergoing a facelift, based on four criteria:

  • Age
  • Attractiveness
  • Success
  • Health

Using an online survey, “highly educated” male and female participants were shown facial photos of several women without indicating if the pictures were taken before or after a facelift procedure.

Women who had facelifts were judged to be…

According to the study participants, the women in the pictures who had gone “under the knife” were judged to be:

  • More educated
  • More successful
  • More attractive
  • Healthier
  • Younger

Maybe you’re not surprised

While we might think it’s obvious that women who have facelifts likely appear younger and more attractive, the results related to education and success were somewhat surprising. Experts may already agree that a facelift can result in measurable changes in appearance, but this 2017 study is the first to measure a broader impact objectively.

Considering whether or not the procedure would be worth it to you?

The benefits of a facelift can go beyond superficial, allowing patients to not only look better to others but also to feel better about their appearance themselves. Many facelift patients report experiencing multiple benefits, including everything from confidence and self-esteem to creativity and energy. An additional bonus is that they may experience concrete benefits, such as professional success, as hiring managers and bosses perceive them as more capable and qualified.
