What Are Dermal Fillers?
As we age our facial muscles start working closer to the skin surface. We start losing collagen and elastin which are indicators of youth. As a result, smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent. Dermal fillers help diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. This type of filler is a very popular choice for smooth and youthful looking skin. Dermal fillers are small injections of gel, usually made of hyaluronic acid. The injections fill in wrinkles and add volume to the jawline, mouth, and eyes. Another place to use fillers is for the lips, when the filler is directly injected into the lips, creating a plump and full effect. With so many places to inject filler, here are some of the benefits of using it.
What Can Dermal Fillers Do?
- Plump thin lips
- Enhance shallow contours
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Restore volume in face
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Dermal fillers are a great non-surgical options, but they have temporary results. Injection the fillers takes around 20-40 minutes depending on the amount of volume needed. While every patient is different, typically, fillers last between 6 to 18 months. Based on the way your body reacts to the filler and the type of hyaluronic acid used, results can last longer or shorter. Each dermal filler is unique with the amount of hyaluronic acid, be sure to inquire at Dr. David Altamira‘s office.

During your consultation, we’ll focus on your goals and expectations. We’ll briefly review your medical history and will evaluate the skin in the proposed treatment area to ensure that the tissue is healthy and free of infection. If your skin health, general health, and expectations align with our explanation of what dermal fillers can accomplish, we may be able to move forward with your treatment during the same visit.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers work by adding volume to the tissue of a certain area of the face or hands. The products that we use are made with hyaluronic acid. This naturally-occurring substance builds volume in targeted tissues by binding to water molecules. The particles of hyaluronic acid hold thousands of water molecules in place for up to two years. Over time, your body will dissolve the hyaluronic acid. As it does, you will notice the subtle return of lines, creases, or other signs of aging.

Restylane Defyne and Refyne are newer members to the dermal filler family. This type of filler helps to restore volume because of weight loss or other causes. Containing hyaluronic acid, you know this will give you the glowing effect you’re looking for.
