Breast Augmentation: Choosing the Right Implant for You

A large component of how the results of your breast augmentation turn out is based on the size, shape, and type of implant you choose. Saline and silicone implants have been around for several years, but gummy bear implants were recently FDA-approved and are quickly gaining popularity in plastic surgery. Learn more about the types of implants available for breast augmentation so you can achieve your desired results.

What Types of Implants Are Available?

Silicone

Silicone implants are silicone shells filled with silicone gel. Many patients report that these look and feel the most natural. They have undergone several improvements over the years, making them much safer for implants. However, if they should rupture, they must be removed or replaced soon after.

Saline

Saline implants consist of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution (saltwater). With this implant, the silicone is filled with the solution after the implant is placed, which allows the surgeon to make a smaller incision. They can also adjust the size once they’re in place to suit your body better or modify them later if needed. Patients have found that they do not feel quite as natural, but this is developing with advancements in the procedure.

Gummy Bear

As their name suggests, gummy bear implants hold their shape even if they become damaged or rupture. They are also made up of a silicone gel, but the gel takes on a different consistency. This texture also makes them feel more natural. They do require a larger incision since they are filled prior to surgery. However, their strength and consistency mean that ruptures and leaks are less likely.

How to Decide Which One Is Right for You?

When deciding on the right implant for your breast augmentation procedure, you may contemplate the texture of the implant, the shape, and the composition (silicone, gummy bear, or saline). You will likely want to feel each type of implant in order to decide what feels the most comfortable and natural for you. Your doctor will also be able to advise you based on the results you’re looking for.
