Which Type of Breast Implant Is Right for You?

Beautiful young brown hair woman in lingerie looking out from the white tulleAfter you’ve made the decision that breast augmentation is right for you, another decision awaits: which type of implant should you get?

Questions To Consider

You may not have even realized that you have a choice when it comes to types of implants, but you do! When deciding on an implant, you’ll want to consider a few things: if you want a smooth or textured surface; if you want a round or shaped implant; and what you would like the implant to be made of or to contain.

Another important factor is what your goals are for your breast augmentation – the look you are trying to achieve. But you don’t have to figure all of this out on your own; Dr. Altamira will use all of this information to make suggestions as to which type of implant may be best.

Types of Implants

There are three different types of implants to choose from:

  • Silicone. These have a silicone outer shell that is filled with silicone gel. Most patients say that silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue than saline implants do. The implant will not collapse if a silicone gel implant ruptures, but some of the silicone gel may leak, and this and the implant will need to be removed.
  • Saline. These also have a silicone outer shell. They are filled with a sterile saline solution once the implants are placed, which not only means a smaller incision is needed, but it also allows for some flexibility with size adjustment. If a saline implant ruptures, the body absorbs the saline, although the shell of the implant will have to be removed.
  • Gummy bear. These are made in a “teardrop” shape, close to the shape of a natural breast. They are made of a highly cohesive silicone gel that is much thicker than regular silicone implants. This gel remains in the shell even if it becomes damaged.
